■ Artist Biography
Keiichi Tanaami (b. 1936, Tokyo) is one of the leading pop artists of postwar Japan, and has been active as multi-genre artist since the 1960s as a graphic designer, illustrator, video artist and fine artist.
Tanaami is an multidisciplinary artist whose creative activities are not confined to a single medium or genre, but actively crosses boundaries from animated works to silk screens, cartoon illustrations, collages, experimental films, paintings, and three-dimensional works. He graduated from Musashino Art University and was awarded a special prize by the Japan Advertising Artists Club. In the 1960s, Tanaami was first introduced to American counterculture and pop art. Inspired by his encounter with Andy Warhol, he has continued to experiment with major themes facing contemporary art, such as the intersection of art and design, art and commerce, art and the public, and beauty of daily life, all while using the design methodology of "editing". Through more than half a century of creative activity, Tanaami has earned an international reputation as one of the pioneers of Pop Art in postwar Japan.
Recent major exhibitions of Tanaami's include "Mirror Reflecting the World" (2020, Nanzuka Underground, Tokyo, Japan), the solo exhibition "TOKYO POP UNDERGROUND" (2019, Jeffrey Deitch, NY), "Keiichi Tanaami" (2019, Kunstmuseum Luzern, Lucerne, Switzerland), "The World Goes Pop" (2015, Tate Modern, London, UK), and "International Pop" (2015, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN). His works are in the permanent collections of MoMA (New York), Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Art Institute of Chicago, M+ (Hong Kong), National Portrait Gallery (Smithsonian Institution, Washington), Hamburger Bahnhof Museum of Modern Art (Berlin), amongst others.
