In its 7th edition, the Deloitte Private’s Art & Finance Report 2021 (“Report”) focused on new trends affecting the global art market and wealth protection industry. As part of its Art & Technology section, the Report included an interview with Startbahn Inc.’s Founder and CEO Taihei Shii. In a discussion with Josephine Ayako Yamada, Manager at the Art & Finance Division of Deloitte Japan, Mr. Shii introduced the possibility for blockchain technology to serve as social infrastructure and improve the Japanese art market.

The Report observed a “growing recognition” in Japan as to art as an asset class in the aftershock of the pandemic. Impact investing and social responsibility are becoming increasingly important for a younger generation of art collectors, and Startbahn Inc. is ideally situated to respond to this tendency towards certifying authenticity and distribution terms of secondary art sales.

Mr. Shii comments: “There is a growing interest from policymakers in positioning art at the core of growth strategy. The Cabinet Office, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Agency for Cultural Affairs, and the Municipal Government of Tokyo seem united in their desire to build resilience through the power of creativity.”

On the growth of the art market post-pandemic, Mr. Shii offered some insights: “the pandemic highlighted the urgent need to affect the commitment for supporting artists.” With Startbahn’s blockchain-based registration system Startrail, the compare is “seeking to raise awareness of the benefits to tracing provenance after sale.”

The Report included other interviews from business leaders of the global art market, representing other leading organizations such as AXA XL, Bonhams, ARTE Generali, and Artnet.
