Startbahn Announces Major Expansion of Its Startrail Blockchain Infrastructure

Startrail business expansion

Extending authentication and information recording from art to a broad range of physical assets, starting with a new GPU business

Startbahn, Inc. (headquartered in Shibuya, Tokyo; led by Taihei Shii; hereafter “Startbahn”) announces a major expansion of its Startrail blockchain infrastructure. Startrail will expand beyond its core function of issuing certificates of provenance to offer a wider range of capabilities, including support for transactions and distribution. Its scope will also broaden from artworks, craftworks and other art and collectible items to physical assets and products of all kinds. As the first initiative in this expansion, Startbahn is launching a GPU business centered on a GPU resource platform, complemented by GPU server sales intermediation.

Expansion of Startrail’s Business Scope

Since launching Startrail in 2019, Startbahn has developed it as infrastructure for authentication, provenance recording and proof of sale, primarily in the arts and culture sector, including art, crafts and original manga artwork. To date, more than 300,000 certificates of provenance, known as Startrail Registry Records (SRRs), have been issued, and the platform has been used by more than 320 businesses.

Businesses across a range of industries have approached Startbahn seeking to ensure the reliability of information about physical goods. Drawing on the stability of its infrastructure and its accumulated operational experience, Startbahn is now expanding Startrail along the following two axes.

Startrail business expansion

1. Expanded Functionality

In addition to issuing certificates of provenance, Startrail will expand to offer a range of functions supporting the entire lifecycle of physical assets. These include recording information specific to each product category, continuously recording usage history and operating status, supporting transactions and distribution, and integrating with payments. The functions needed to enable these capabilities will be developed in stages; please see the capability list below for details.

2. Broader Asset Coverage

Beyond its existing focus on art and collectibles, Startrail will support authentication and information recording for physical assets and products of all kinds. Projects are currently underway across a range of categories, including GPU servers, gold bullion and automobiles, with announcements planned in the near future.

First Initiative: Launch of the GPU Business

Startbahn is launching its GPU business as the first initiative in this expansion.

The rapid adoption of generative AI is driving growing demand for the distribution and management of GPU servers and GPU computing resources. At the same time, efforts to strengthen controls to prevent military and illicit use are advancing, including the proposed U.S. Remote Access Security Act (RASA). Startbahn expects that not only GPU server sales, but also cloud-based use of GPU computing resources, will increasingly require detailed management of when, where, by whom and to what extent resources are used.

In this environment, existing systems face challenges in areas such as user identity verification (KYC), equipment authentication, provenance management and transparency in resource usage.

Startbahn will address these challenges by combining authentication and provenance management technologies developed in the arts and culture sector with Licensed User Wallets (LUWs), which enable wallet-based automation of identity verification. By using Startrail to record and manage both GPU server information and provenance, and GPU resource usage history, Startbahn aims to build infrastructure that supports transparency and trust in equipment and resource use as regulatory expectations evolve.

Looking ahead, Startbahn also envisions providing authentication and provenance records for creative works generated with GPUs in the AI era. Its longer-term vision includes automated transactions using stablecoins and other means, connecting computing resources with the distribution of creative works through a consistent foundation of trust.

A marketplace supporting the distribution of GPU computing resources is currently under development. By combining it with hardware authentication and operating records through Startrail, Startbahn aims to enable more transparent distribution of GPU resources. Further details will be announced at a later date. The business also includes GPU server sales intermediation. Startbahn will develop its sales intermediation business in cooperation with a System Integrator partner in Japan of Super Micro Computer, Inc. (headquartered in the United States; hereafter “Supermicro”), which has a global presence in the market for generative AI servers.

Planned Areas of Functional Development

To support Startrail’s expansion, Startbahn is exploring the following capabilities. Each feature is intended to be introduced independently and in stages. Scope, priorities and timing may change. Further details will be announced separately as each feature becomes ready for release.

E-commerce cart integration: Supporting the issuance of certificates of provenance through e-commerce sites.

Flexible metadata: Configuring and managing information fields for different asset categories.

MCP integration: Supporting the use of Startrail through AI agents via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Access control: Managing viewing and editing permissions for recorded information.

Stablecoin payment integration: Connecting transactions involving assets linked to certificates of provenance with stablecoin payments.

Dynamic metadata: Recording and updating changing information, such as operating status and usage history.

LUW Management: Managing identity-verified Licensed User Wallets (LUWs) at the corporate level.

Building on the technologies and expertise it has developed in the arts and culture sector, Startbahn will continue to accelerate Startrail’s development as infrastructure for authenticating physical assets and preserving their value over time. Startbahn welcomes inquiries from businesses and local governments interested in applying Startrail in new fields or collaborating on its GPU business.
